Clever bird goes “fishing” – using cigarette butt as bait to catch fish

This was at some water park in Mauritius; found it on Science News Blog twitter (@SciNewsBlog).

Thoroughly intriguing. Over the last 5 years I’ve seen some videos of tool use by various birds that have blown my mind; clearly some birds operate on a high cognitive level.

This BBC article from 2009 about rooks using stones as tools was memorable: (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/8059688.stm);

Another one from 2010 showing New Caledonian crows using sticks was awesome as well:

Edit (Jul-11-2013): Adding the lock-picking cockatoo mentioned in this week’s news to the list. (http://www.bbc.co.uk/nature/23150941)
